That’s right, there are two MSR tents on our list. The Elixir 2 provides a good liveable space, and has those little MSR touches that we love, like sizeable vestibules, internal storage pockets, and sturdy glow-in-the-dark zip-pulls. Better for warmer conditions, it still stands up to a hefty downpour and offers great wind resistance. It’s much heavier than others on our list, but it’s also much more reasonably priced, and given its durable, quality construction, offers very good value.

Pros: Good living space, packs down nicely, great value for the quality.

Cons: MUCH heavier than we’d like in a backpacking tent - we’ve included it because of its quality.

Verdict: A fantastic, reasonably-priced tent to suit most UK conditions.

First Impressions

The MSR Elixir 2 makes an excellent first impression with its sleek design and reputation for quality. It’s spacious, thoughtfully constructed and offers a good balance of durability and comfort at a reasonable price. While it’s not the lightest tent out there, it feels sturdy and reliable, making it a solid choice for car camping or shorter hikes. It’s an ideal pick for campers who value comfort and durability over ultralight weight.

Sleeping Experience

The Elixir 2 excels in giving you a comfortable sleeping experience. Its symmetrical floor plan and vertical walls make the interior feel roomy, easily accommodating two people. The dual doors add convenience, letting each camper come and go without disturbing the other. Ventilation is excellent, reducing the chance of condensation, while the privacy screen means you can enjoy personal space even in a crowded campsite. Whether you’re stretching out or organising your gear, the interior design feels thoughtful and accommodating.

Features Analysis

The Elixir 2 comes packed with features that enhance the camping experience. Dual vestibules provide plenty of space for packs, boots and other gear, while the well-placed internal pockets—on the walls and ceiling—help keep smaller items organised. The tent’s ventilation does its job and its full-coverage rainfly and steep walls ensure excellent weatherproofing in rain and wind. Fully opening doors add convenience and the balance of mesh and fabric in the tent body provides a great mix of airflow and privacy.

Construction and Durability

MSR’s reputation for quality construction shines through with the Elixir 2. The materials, including 40D ripstop nylon for the inner tent and 68D ripstop polyester with a 1500mm polyurethane coating for the fly, give it durability and weather resistance. Lightweight yet strong aluminum poles add stability, even in challenging conditions. While the weight of 2.7kg might feel heavy for long hikes, the build quality justifies it, offering long-lasting reliability. Attachments, zippers and seams all feel robust and well-crafted, giving confidence in its ability to handle a variety of conditions.

Final Verdict

The MSR Elixir 2 is a versatile, durable, and thoughtfully designed tent that performs well in a wide range of conditions. While its weight makes it less suitable for extended backpacking trips, it’s an excellent choice for shorter hikes, car camping or multi-day basecamps. The spacious interior, strong weatherproofing, and well-placed features make it a great option for campers who value comfort and quality. At this price point, it’s a solid investment for those who need a reliable three-season tent that balances versatility and durability.
