First Impressions

The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL-2 immediately impresses as a lightweight, feature-rich tent that doesn’t break the bank. Its design focuses on usability, with steep walls and a cross-bar for extra headroom, making it feel more spacious than you might expect from an ultralight tent. While it’s clearly built for warmer, three-season use, its thoughtful construction and clever features make it a great choice for those who want comfort without carrying extra weight.

Sleeping Experience

The Copper Spur HV UL-2 offers a generally comfortable sleeping experience, with steep walls and good headroom thanks to its connected pole structure. The tapered design at one end, however, means things get a bit tight around the feet, especially for two people. The largely mesh inner ensures excellent airflow, keeping things cool on warm nights, but it may leave you feeling chilly in cooler weather. Overall, it’s a solid option for one or two backpackers who are looking for a light weight and livable tent.

Features Analysis

This tent stands out for its innovative features. The dual vestibules are not only great for gear storage but can also be rigged as awnings using hiking poles (or sturdy sticks). Inside, you’ll find a variety of pockets, including a 3D-bin pocket that can hold more gear than most standard tent storage. There’s even a clever device pocket with a cable-routing option, making it easier to use electronics in the tent. Big Agnes has clearly thought through the needs of modern campers, making this one of the most fully-featured ultralight tents available.

Construction and Durability

The Copper Spur HV UL-2 is built with Big Agnes’ proprietary ultralight double ripstop fabric, treated for waterproofing with a 1500mm polyurethane coating. While poles, clips and zippers are sturdy and reliable, the thinness of the fabric feels a bit delicate, as is common in ultralight gear. This isn’t the tent you’d want to push to its limits in extreme weather or rocky terrain, but with some care, it should hold up well for regular three-season use.

Final Verdict

The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL-2 is a standout for backpackers who value light weight, thoughtful features and solid performance in warmer conditions. Its innovative design makes it highly livable for its size and weight, and while it’s on the pricier side, it’s a great value for the quality you’re getting. If you’re planning multi-day trips in mild to warm climates and want a tent that’s easy to carry without sacrificing comfort, the Copper Spur HV UL-2 is a top-tier choice.
